As Headmaster at the Crossroads
School I worked with Carol Muhs for fifteen years.
She taught reading, writing, study skills and spelling
and was head of her department. She is a caring and
dedicated teacher, admired and respected by her students,
their parents and her colleagues. Well trained in the
aspects of teaching children with learning disabilities,
she continues to work to expand her knowledge and skills.
Her work is distinguished by her thoughtful planning,
meticulous attention to detail, and the sensitive way
she deals with everyone. I could always count on her
to be thoroughly professional. |

| I
owe a lot of my academic success to Mrs. Muhs, who was
both my elementary school teacher and reading tutor.
At an early age I realized that I learned differently
from others. Growing up, I always wanted to be an average
student, but being dyslexic made the process of reading
and writing a challenging task for me. When I wanted
to give up, she provided me hope, perseverance and a
reason to move forward. When I was having difficulty
learning a new concept, she made it fun. She believed
in me at a time when I did not believe in myself. Her
dedication to her students makes her an excellent educator
and role-model. |

| Carol Muhs is an excellent teacher. I had her as a
mentor when I was at the Crossroads School and she helped
me immensely with my reading and writing work. When I
started 6th grade at Crossroads, I was far behind in
my reading ability, at barely a primer level, in fact.
But, by the time I left the 8th grade at Crossroads,
I was reading close to grade level, advancing eight grades
in only three years. This was due in no small part to
Carol Muhs. The reading and writing support that she
gave made more of a difference than I can easily describe.
In short, it is my humble opinion that she is a great
teacher and you are unlikely to find anyone better. |

| Carol Muhs was an unbelievably
valuable tool in my son Ian’s education. Not only
did Carol aid Ian in improving his decoding and fluency
skills, she provided insight into Ian’s learning
style. She helped him gain an understanding of both his
academic strengths and weaknesses. Carol taught Ian how
to use those strengths and how to advocate for himself
in a knowledgeable and respectful manner. She held Ian
to a high academic standard and encouraged him to stretch
himself as a student. Because Carol believed in Ian,
he could believe in himself- there is no greater gift
a teacher can give. |

Mrs. Muhs is very fine and smart,
likes kids, has a sense of humor, but what she taught
me most were strategies to read. She made it easier
and helped me.

Carol
varied her strategies and took the angst our son felt
out of reading. These strategies he learned provide
the foundation for which future decoding and comprehending
will occur as the material becomes more difficult.
Carol’s kind, patient and encouraging
manner are worthy of praise.

Carol Muhs entered my son Adam’s educational
program as his initial reading teacher and 1:1 mentor
in the 2009-2010 school year. As his mentor, she focused
on his writing mechanics and organizational skills.
In that 6th grade year our son’s reading soared
from a 5th grade level to a 9th grade level. His writing
skills improved greatly as well, specifically in organizing
his thoughts, sentence structure and expansion, essay
writing and recognition of errors in his writing mechanics
such as grammar, capitalization, spelling. Carol graciously
continued to work with Adam as his private tutor during
the summer of 2010 to prepare him for his new school.
Adam currently is a 7th grade student attending The
Shipley School in Bryn Mawr and Carol remains his private
tutor. The quality I appreciate the most about Carol’s
approach to her instruction is her ability to interact
with her students in a way that gains their trust and
produces work that they are proud of and builds their
confidence. She regularly collaborates with Adam’s
teachers at Shipley and is an active participant in
advocating for him in ways that enable his teachers
to know how he learns best. Equally, she teaches Adam
to self-advocate and to seek solutions to areas of
difficulty. As a parent, she keeps me informed of his
progress in great detail all along the way.
I am very proud of how far Adam has come under Carol’s
direction. I know that Adam has worked very hard to
come from behind grade level in reading and writing
and to now accomplish grades that exemplify his true
intellectual ability is something that he can be proud
of too. I attribute Adam’s huge strides in his
academic success to Carol Muhs’ tutoring approach
and knowledge of how kids learn best at a variety of
grade levels. I appreciate the support Carol has given
to Adam and our family this last year and a half. I
look forward to continuing our tutoring needs with
her service for as long as Adam requires her support.
Thank you Carol for all that you do for kids like Adam.
