What We Do
Direct, Multi-Sensory
Language-Based Instruction
Word Identification and Spelling Skill Remediation
Remediation of basic skills is a priority. Multi-sensory
learning through a direct, systematic approach such as
the Wilson Reading System teaches students to identify
and spell words more fluently and accurately. Multi-sensory
approaches engage as many senses as possible in the learning
process. The ability to read and spell more accurately
builds confidence.
Build Reading Comprehension Skills
Reading comprehension instruction means helping students
to understand what they read. Scientific research reveals
that comprehension can be improved by instruction that
helps students use specific strategies to understand what
they read. The focus here will be on explicit instruction
of specific strategies to help students become purposeful,
active, engaged, readers who can then monitor their own
reading comprehension. Students will be taught through
direct explanation- why and when they will use these strategies,
and through modeling, guided practice and application.
Fluency Instruction
Fluency is the ability to read text
accurately and quickly with accurate inflection and expression.
Fluency is developed as a result of frequent opportunities
for the student to practice reading text that is read easily
and successfully. Research evidence suggests that fluency
is important because when a reader does not have to concentrate
on identifying the words (decoding), they can focus on the
meaning of the text and therefore, improve their comprehension.
Fluency instruction will focus on teacher modeling, and a
variety of repeated reading activities.
Develop Writing Skills
Writing is a complex task for students to learn. Becoming
a proficient writer can often be frustrating and challenging.
Today, writing is an essential communication skill for
academic success. Students must be able to organize, support
and present their ideas in writing.
Writing skill development will be
based on the individual student’s need. Emphasis
of the instruction will be to develop a solid foundation
of the writing skills expected in typical academic tasks
and assignments, and will present a structured approach
to help students tackle various types of expository writing.
Planning, Organization, Study Skills
Direct instruction is provided to help students learn effective
strategies to improve long and short term planning, organization
and study skills. These strategies are designed to help
students become independent learners and meet with a higher
degree of success in school.
Academic Support
Academic support in various content areas is offered to meet
individual student needs to support class assignments and
for test preparation. This support focuses on strategy instruction
and practice for development and improvement in specific
skill areas.
