Carol Muhs Bio
Carol Muhs is an experienced,
dedicated, compassionate educator. For the past 27 years, Carol
has been addressing the needs of children with language-based
learning differences and creating a path for understanding
for these struggling learners. She has devoted herself to helping
children who have often become disheartened and frustrated
with school, become confident, capable learners by creating
a caring, supportive environment. Through Carol’s
instructional guidance, these children have become self-assured
and have achieved academic success. With empathy, skill, and
commitment she has helped make a difference in the lives of hundreds
of children.
Carol knows what it takes
to be a model of excellence in the field of education. During
her 27 years as an educator she worked in a variety of roles
at the Crossroads School (a school created to address the unmet
academic needs of children with language-based learning differences).
These roles included classroom teacher, small group instructor,
one-on-one instructor, and instructional supervisor. In addition
to her teaching duties, she supervised and coordinated the
Mentor Program for the past 15 years. This ancillary program
was designed to address a student’s particular
learning needs through concentrated individualized instruction.
During these years, Carol’s instructional and professional
strengths played a vital role in the success of this program.
Carol is experienced in administering informal
diagnostic assessments, addressing student’s need and designing individualized
instruction while encouraging individual interests and strengths.
She has extensive training as well as a vast knowledge of instructional
programs in the areas of reading, writing and study skills. In
addition to her work with students, Carol has presented teacher
training and parent education programs, and served as a guide
and consultant for parents.
What drew Carol to the field
of special education? As a child, Carol’s best friend had four siblings who had special needs.
She grew up next door to this family and often helped her friend
care for her brothers. Carol spent time traveling with them on
long vacations and camping trips. Later, as a teen, she volunteered
as a camp counselor for children with special needs. In Carol’s
own words, “I grew to love being around these kids. They
were full of smiles and determination. I wanted to be a part
of helping them succeed.” In her training as a special
educator, Carol had a variety of field experiences which gave
her a broader and deeper view into the world of children who
had to adjust to different methods of learning. In her last semester
of student teaching, she finally found her niche as she experienced
working with children who had learning differences and specific
reading disabilities.
Carol is Pennsylvania certified and earned her
Bachelor of Science degree from Millersville University of Pennsylvania
in the field of Special Education. Carol is highly trained and
has a variety of specialized training and expertise in the field
of research and language-based, multi-sensory learning instruction.
She participated in graduate studies in the field of Learning
Disabilities, and received certification in Alphabetic Phonics
instruction at Columbia University, Teachers College. In addition,
she has 10 years experience teaching the Wilson Reading System.
Carol maintains continued professional development
through ongoing training opportunities. Most recently Carol has
completed training to present Dyslexia Simulations for the Philadelphia
Branch International Dyslexia Association.
Carol is affiliated with the International Dyslexia Association
(IDA), Specialists of Schools (S.O.S), Association for Supervision
and Curriculum Development (ASCD), and Children and Adults with
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). Carol resides in West Chester, Pennsylvania with her husband
and four children. She takes pride in her parenting skills and
is devoted to spending quality time with her family. For relaxation,
she especially enjoys reading, distance running, the beach, kayaking
and camping. |
